Obituary: Gordon Heinonen

Gordon Heinonen, 85, a resident of the Houghton Canal passed away Thursday evening August 3, 2023, at Aurora Baycare Medical Center in Green Bay, where he had been a patient for the past 2 weeks.

      He was born on April 27, 1938, in Detroit, MI, a son of the late Matt and Edna (Poyhonen) Heinonen.  Gordon was raised in Southfield, MI, and was a graduate of the Southfield High School with the class of 1956.

     On May 10, 1958, he was united in marriage to the former Marilyn Niemi.  The couple has been able to celebrate 65 years of marriage and 75 years together.  Gordon had worked as a mail carrier for the US Postal Service as the couple resided in Farmington, MI.  For the past 45 years they have made their home on the Houghton Canal.  Locally Mr. Heinonen had worked various odd jobs and had owned and operated rental properties with his wife.

     Mr. Heinonen was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton.

     Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother John Heinonen; his sister-in-law: Carol Heinonen; and his brothers-in-law: Bill Niemi and Mike Johnson.

     Surviving are: His wife; Marilyn Heinonen; His sisters & brothers: Mary (Pete) Kiilunen, Ann Niemi, Judy Johnson, Nancy (Don) Tulkki, Fred (Annie) Heinonen, Jean (Chuck) Aho, Linda (Joe) Kilpela; Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; His special friends Dave & Dawn Anderson and families

     A funeral service for Gordon will be held 12:00 pm Monday, August 7, 2023, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Pastor Mark Halonen to officiate.  Burial will be in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.

     Friends may call on Monday, August 7, 2023, from 10:00 am until time of services at the church.
