MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Pirates tonight. Matt Manning will pitch against Johan Oviedo. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers dropped their fourth straight game last night, falling 5-3 to the Nationals. Joey Wiemer’s home run gave the Crew a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh, but Washington scored three times off Elvis Peguero in the bottom of the inning to put the game away. The meltdown spoiled a good start by Corbin Burnes, who allowed two runs over six innings.

That series continues in Washington tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Josiah Gray.

The Red defeated the Cubs, so Milwaukee drops back into second place in the National League East, a game behind Cincinnati.

Today is the Major League Baseball trade deadline. Teams have until 6:00 this evening to acquire players that can remain on their rosters through the playoffs.

As of this morning, pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Lorenzen are still Tigers. Both are considered trade possibilities, but would be short-term investments for other clubs. Lorenzen’s one-year contract expires at the end of the season. Rodriguez has a longer deal, but can opt out at the end of this season.

Former Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario is headed back to where he started – the Chicago Cubs. Candelario was enjoying a productive season with the Nationals, after struggling last year in Detroit. The Tigers obtained him via trade in 2017. Chicago will give Washington a pair or prospects.

The Brewers stopped by the Mets’ fire sale, and picked up outfielder and first baseman Mark Canha. New York gets minor league pitcher Justin Jarvis in exchange. Canha is batting .245 with six home runs and 29 RBI in 89 games this season.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team has been picked to finish fifth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season. Coaches picked defending two-time National Champion in Ferris State to finish first, followed by Grand Valley State and Davenport University. Northern Michigan was picked to finish last.

The Huskies open their season at home against Hillsdale on September 9th.
