75th Copper Country Strawberry Festival Starts Tomorrow

The Copper Country Strawberry Festival started back in 1949 to celebrate the huge amounts of berries that were being grown in the Copper Country by local farmers. This weekend marks the festival’s 75th anniversary.

“This year we will have free horse-drawn wagon rides, both on Friday and on Saturday. On Friday, wagon rides are from 4 to 7pm, and on Saturday, the horse-drawn wagon rides are from noon until 3pm. And then we are bringing back, because of the 75th anniversary, we are bringing back the old fashioned cake walk, which will be in the Chassell park pavilion, on Friday afternoon from 3 to 4pm. And the in the parade, we’re having a big, helium strawberry balloon in the parade, and we are having several special floats – the Chassell Lion’s Club will have a float, and the Chassell Women’s Club will have a float.” – Judy Evert, Chassell Lion’s Club Recording Secretary and Membership Director, and previous President of Chassell Lion’s Club

There will be many children’s activities during the two days, and perhaps the highlight of the event, the sale of strawberry shortcake. Last year, it was reported they sold around 4,900 slices of shortcake. They will also have t-shirts available for purchase, which have already been popular.

“When you think of a small community putting on a small festival like that- because you know, you’ve had such a successful event, and we all pitched in and [did] it, not just a certain group it’s everybody- it’s just amazing how it all comes together.”

You can attend the festival starting Friday afternoon.
