Tigers Drop Two – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Tigers dropped both ends of their doubleheader against the Braves yesterday. In a 10-7 loss in the opening game, Detroit took an early lead, powered by home runs from Spencer Torkelson, Miguel Cabrera and Eric Haase. Reese Olsen couldn’t hold it, though, and was chased in the fourth inning and charged with seven runs. In the nightcap, Detroit fell behind early, then tied the game 5-5 with help from homers by Andy Ibáñez, Matt Vierling and Jake Rogers. Eddie Rosario’s solo shot off Michael Lorenzen in the sixth gave Atlanta a 6-5 victory.

The Tigers visit the Twins tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Sonny Gray. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Twins handed the Brewers a 4-2 loss yesterday. Homers by Brian Anderson and Luis Urías gave Milwaukee an early lead, but Minnesota scored four times off Colin Rae in the third inning to take control.

The Brewers have today off, and host the Pirates tomorrow night.

Milwaukee brought pitcher Eric Lauer off the injured list yesterday, then sent him to Nashville. He’s been out for nearly a month with a shoulder injury.

• A and S Industrial/Loukus Tech defeated Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s 16-1.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League action last night…
• Superior Service defeated Gold Standard 7-3.
• JB’s outscored REL 15-7. Grace Brunet was the winning pitcher and Vera Peterson took the loss. Stella Soumis and Mackenzie Ekdahl each had three singles for JB’s. Ashley Lehto had two singles for REL.
• Superior National Bank thumped Tervo 21-12. For SNB, Meg Ruohonen had a double and a single, and Larissa Anderson had two singles. For Tervo, Alana Nolan had three singles.

NHL

The Red Wings have named Dan Watson as the new coach of their top minor league affiliate. Watson takes over the Grand Rapids Griffins after 13 seasons with Detroit’s minor league affiliate in Toledo, including the past seven years as head coach.
