A Century Of History For Bethany Baptist Church

Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay has been around for just about a century now.

The current lead pastor, Brian Knight, explained how the church came to be.

“It was a little over 100 years ago that there was a group of Finnish immigrants that were here in Dollar Bay, and there was groups from across the UP and even into Illinois and Minnesota that recognized the need to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Finnish immigrants in this community. Ando so they sent missionaries here and they were able to reach into this community and reach those folks and it was on June 16th 1923 that group of believers organized together had their first worship services together, and that’s the origin of Bethany Baptist Church 100 years ago this week.” – Brian Knight, Lead Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church

He said the first meeting took place in an old farm house, and eventually the group rented a building for a couple dollars a month. Eventually in the 1930’s, the group bought the current church building, where they still are today.

To celebrate the 100 years of their formation, they will have festivities and information on the history of the church starting at 10am on Saturday.
