MiDNR’s “Free Three” Weekend Is This Weekend

The Michigan DNR encourages residents to take full advantage of what they call the ‘free three’ weekend.

There are two full days where both Michigan residents and those from out of state can enjoy free state park access, fishing, and ORV riding.

This Saturday and Sunday, the public can fish for completely free for in-season species without a license. All other fishing requirements must be adhered to.

“We got a lot of places to fish- in lakes, we got rivers, if you go to our website we have a list of what are called family friendly fishing sites, where [it has] good places to take your kids and there’s a good likelihood they’ll catch fish when they go to those places. We also have a database that shows where we’ve stocked all of our fish, we have a “Trout Trails” app – some people hop from one place to another and they call it a ‘trout trail’, so we have a app that shows you a lot of those locations. This time of year I’d say of course it’s Trout, it’s Salmon, it’s also Walleye and Pike- those are big- and got some Bass fishing too. Those are kind of the big ones.” – John Pepin, Deputy Public Information Officer with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources
