Obituary: Thomas J. Guzek

Thomas J. Guzek, 82, a resident of Houghton, passed away suddenly but peacefully at his home on Monday, May 29, 2023.

Tom was born on October 23, 1940, in Hamtramack MI to the late Teofil and Genevieve (Jakiel) Guzek. He was a graduate of Denby High School, and later earned a Masters of Science degree in Speech and Language Pathology from Wayne State University.

Tom was instrumental in the local educational community. His influence on the lives his students, and their families resonates to this day. Those who knew and loved him will fondly remember his warm smile and compassionate nature.

Tom was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Dollar Bay where he was active as a Lector. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, camping, boating, scuba diving and metal detecting. He also had a great love for animals and nature.

He is survived by his two beloved sons: James (Chassell, MI) and Bryan (Scituate, MA ), his daughter in law Melissa and his grandchildren,  Rose, Ben, and Leo, and his former wife Jean Pyykkonen (Chassell, MI) as well as numerous cousins who were very dear to him.

Preceding Tom in death were his parents, and his beloved dogs, Nicky, Benji, and Koda.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial for Tom will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Rev. Fr. Jubish Joseph to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

Visitation will take place in the Mt. Carmel room of the Church of the Resurrection from 10am until the time of Mass at church.
