High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton and Kingsford split their doubleheader, with the Gremlins falling 13-0 in game one, and taking the nightcap 12-2.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Ironwood 14-1 and 17-6. In the opening game, Clea Ollenkato had two hits, including a triple, and scored three runs. Grace Brunet had two hits, including a double. She earned the win in the circle, giving up one hit over five innings. Ollenkato had three hits, including two doubles, in the nightcap, and scored three runs. Brunet and Brynn Arko each scored three times.
• Baraga took two games from L’Anse. Scores were not reported.

Houghton’s Grace Brunet has been named WestPAC Softball Player of the Year. Negaunee’s Grace Nardi was honored as Pitcher of the Year, and Randy Carlson as Coach of the Year.

Local members of the all-conference first team include Clea Ollenketo from Houghton, Sadie Biekkola and Brooke Koskela from Hancock, and Lena Myhren from Calumet. Brynn Arko and Fayah Zapolnik from the Gremlins were added to the second team, along with Ella Storm from the Bulldogs, and Isabella Coppo and Ashley Johnson from the Copper Kings. Katy Fay from Houghton, Sydnie Scholie from Hancock and Helen Beiring from Calumet earned honorable mention votes. See the full roster here.

Gab Carlson of Houghton shared WestPAC Baseball Player of the Year honors with Negaunee’s Evan Gauthier. Carson McLean from Iron Mountain was named Pitcher of the Year, and Houghton’s Kevin Bostwick was named Coach of the Year.

Local all-conference first team members include Cam Cischke and Eli Heathman from Houghton, Ned Larson and Bryce Tanner from Hancock, and Bruce Parisot from Calumet. Bryce Pugh from the Gremlins was placed on the second team, along with Bulldogs Caleb Isaacson, Luke Mikkola and Zach Geborkoff, and Copper Kings Alex Tarnowski and Braden Cima. Houghton’s Joel Durocher earned honorable mention votes. See the full roster here.

NBA

The Celtics stayed alive in the NBA Eastern Conference finals with a 110-97 victory over the Heat last night. Miami still leads that series 3-2, and will host game six tomorrow.

NHL

The Stars staved off elimination in the Western Conference finals by edging the Golden Knights 3-2 in overtime last evening. Vegas leads that set 3-1, and will host game five tomorrow.

MLB

The Tigers shut down the White Sox 7-2 last night. Alex Faedo gave up both Chicago runs over six innings, struck out 10, and earned his first win of the season. Akil Baddoo homered. He, Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson each had two hits.

The Tigers host the White Sox again tonight. Joey Wentz will start against Lance Lynn. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell to the Giants 5-0 last evening. Julio Teheran took the tough loss in his Milwaukee debut, giving up one run over five innings. San Francisco broke the game open with four runs off Tyson Miller in the eighth. The Milwaukee offense has not produced a run in its last 29 innings.

The Brewers entertain the Giants again tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Alex Wood.
