DEQ Tightens Restrictions On Eagle Mine

The Department of Environmental Quality has approved revisions to the surface water discharge permit for the Eagle Mine’s Humboldt Mill near Marquette.

The permit safeguards wetlands and the middle branch of the Escanaba River.

The DEQ placed a draft permit on public notice in December and held a public hearing in January.

Revisions made to the permit in response to public comment include: The total authorized flow was halved, from 2.8 million gallons per day to 1.4 million.

Effluent limitations were added for total dissolved solids and temperature monitoring was added.

In addition, the Eagle Mine provided supporting information for their anti-degradation demonstration.
