Sweeps for Houghton Baseball, Hancock Softball – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Iron Mountain 14-11 and 13-5. Cameron Cischke collected four hits and five RBI. Eli Heathman had four hits and four RBI. Gab Carlson had five hits and scored four runs. Bryce Pugh blasted a two-run home run. Pugh got the win in game one, and Cischke earned the win in game two.
• L’Anse fell to Ironwood 8-1 and 10-3. Dean Magaraggia had three hits and scored twice in the nightcap.

In baseball today…
• Calumet welcomes Negaunee.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to L’Anse.
• Jeffers hosts Ontonagon.
• Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Ironwood.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton and Calumet split their doubleheader. The Gremlins built an early 5-0 lead in the opener, then held off a late Copper Kings comeback for a 6-3 win. Grace Brunet struck out seven to earn a complete game win. She also had three hits. Calumet outlasted Houghton 20-16 in the nightcap. The Copper Kings plated six runs in the top of the seventh to break a 14-14 tie. The teams combined for 41 hits.
• Hancock blanked Jeffers 19-0 and 17-0. Sadie Biekkola was the winning pitcher in game one and also had two hits, including a three-run home run. Brooke Koskela also had two hits for the Bulldogs. Sydnie Scholie picked up the win in game two. Mallory Sporalski had three hits to lead the Bulldogs and Scholie, Sofie Freeman and Emilie Pierner each added two hits.

On today’s softball schedule…
• Houghton plays at Baraga.
• Calumet travels to Westwood.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell visits L’Anse.

In high school soccer yesterday…
• Houghton v Iron Mountain – no report.

On today’s schedule…
• Houghton entertains Kingsford.

In high school track yesterday, Houghton dominated the Copper Country Invitational.
• On the women’s side, Lake Linden-Hubbell placed second, followed by Baraga, Hancock, Ontonagon, Calumet, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell and Ewen-Trout Creek. Lily Ross of the Gremlins claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Lake Linden’s Emily Jokela won the 200 and 400-meter dashes, and the 300-meter hurdles. Caitlyn Strom from Calumet took the 100-meter dash, the high jump and the long jump.
• On the men’s side, Calumet finished second, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Baraga, Ontonagon, Hancock, Jeffers, Chassell and L’Anse. Luke Hill of the Gremlins won the 800 and 1600-meter runs, and Brody Mattila claimed the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.

• Several area teams will compete at the Range Bank Invitational at Wawanowin.

College

Former Finlandia University Athletic Director Curtis Wittenberg has joined the athletic department at Michigan Tech as Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations. Wittenberg joined Finlandia in 2003 as assistant women’s basketball coach. He also has a long history of coaching high school teams in the Copper Country.

NBA

The NBA Western Conference championship series opens tonight, as the Lakers visit the Nuggets. The Heat and Celtics begin the Eastern Conference finals tomorrow.

The NBA Draft Lottery will be held tonight. With the worst record in the league last season, the Pistons are one of three teams which have a one-in-seven chance at getting the first pick.

NHL

The NHL conference finals are set, following the Stars’ 2-1 win over the Kraken in game seven of their Western Conference semifinal set last night. The Panthers and Hurricanes will open the Eastern Conference championship series Thursday. The Stars and Golden Knights will begin the Western Conference final Friday.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Pirates tonight. Michael Lorenzen will start against Luis L. Ortiz. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the Cardinals 18-1 last evening. St. Louis capped the game with 10 runs in the eighth inning.

The Brewers visit the Cardinals again tonight. Wade Miley will pitch against Jordan Montgomery.

Milwaukee has signed veteran first baseman Darin Ruf. He was recently released by the Giants.

U.P. Sports Hall of Fame

This year’s Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Class was inducted over the weekend. Honorees with local ties include…
• Lisa Twardzik, whose Calumet High School volleyball teams won 10 conference titles, 11 district crowns and 10 regional championships over 20 seasons as head coach.
• Golfer John Koskinen of Baraga, who earned all-conference honors at Michigan State, and went on to become a touring professional and a college coach.
• Chris Lett, who was a cross-country standout at Houghton High School and Michigan State University, and qualified for the 1996 Olympic trials.
• Jim Mattson, whose L’Anse track teams won three U.P. titles, and who was a multi-sport standout at Baraga High School, Suomi College, and Northern Michigan University.
• Other inductees included track star Ginger Polich from Ironwood, football and basketball coach Dom McDonald from Iron River, multi-sport standout Katie (Hoy) Batten from Newberry and Lake Superior State, David Cvengros of Wakefield who played both basketball and tennis at Michigan State, harness racing legend Joe Casagranda from Crystal Falls, and former Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill from Sault Ste. Marie.
