Baraga County Board Reiterates Second Amendment Support

The Baraga County Board of Commissioners has become the latest local county board to go on record supporting Second Amendment Rights.

At last night’s meeting, commissioners passed a resolution supporting firearms ownership. The full text of the resolution was not provided to those attending the meeting, but commission Chair Gale Eilola read a summary…

…to diligently preserve and protect those rights by rejecting any provision, statute, law, rule, order or regulation that may infringe, have tendency to infringe, or place any additional burdens on the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.

A second pro-Second Amendment resolution that would also have called on the state to provide adequate mental health services was withdrawn from the agenda.

The board also endorsed Michigan House Bill 4284, known as “The Revised School Code.” The bill would require that learning standards be set for “math, science, reading, history, geography, economics, American government, and writing.”

Eilola listed specific American history events which the bill would mandate be taught…

The American Revolution; founding documents of the United States including but not limited to the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Federalist Papers; the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Viet Nam War, and the Civil Rights Movement.

The bill has drawn criticism because it does not include any music, art, or physical education requirements.

The bill is sponsored by Eaton County Republican Gina Johnson, and is currently being considered by the House Committee on Government Operations.

From an otherwise light agenda, commissioners appointed Lance Heikkinen from Baraga American Legion Post 444 to serve on the Veterans Affairs Committee.
