High School
Both Houghton track teams earned victories at the Lakes Invitational at Lake Linden yesterday. The host Lakes finished second in both the boys and girls events.
On the girls side, West Iron County placed third, followed by Hancock, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Calumet, Baraga and Chassell. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins took the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Abi Codere of the Lakes claimed the 100-meter hurdles and the pole vault. Lake Linden’s Emily Jokela set a new meet record in the 300-meter hurdles.
On the boys side, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placed third, followed by Calumet, Chassell, Jeffers, Hancock, West Iron County and Baraga. Luke Hill of the Gremlins took the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Chase Benson of the Blue Bolts won the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Houghton’s Zack Horsch set a new meet record in the pole vault with a vault of 13′ 7″.

In high school softball yesterday…
• L’Anse split their doubleheader at Iron Mountain, winning the first game 8-5, and dropping the nightcap 13-7.

College Hockey
Michigan Tech has released its 2023-2024 hockey schedule.
The Huskies will open October 7th in the US Hockey Hall of Fame Game at Minnesota-Duluth. They’ll host Alaska and Wisconsin, visit St. Lawrence and Clarkson, and entertain Augustana before beginning their Central Collegiate Hockey Association season the first weekend in December at home against Bowling Green. Home-and-home series against Northern Michigan will take place the second weekend in December, and the first weekend in February. Minnesota State will visit for the Winter Carnival series.

Former Red Wing Petr Klíma has died. Klíma defected from his native Czechoslovakia in 1985 at age 20, ditching his Czech teammates while touring in Germany, and hiding out for several days until Wings officials could help him request political asylum. He played his first four NHL seasons in Detroit, then was traded to the Oilers midway through his fifth season. He also played for the Lightning, the Kings and the Penguins before concluding his NHL career back in Detroit in the 1998-1999 season. Following the fall of communism, Klíma was able to return to his home country, where he passed away yesterday at age 58.
MLB
The Tigers completed a series sweep of the Mets with a 2-0 victory yesterday. First inning home runs by Riley Greene and Javier Báez off Justin Verlander provided the game’s only scoring. Eduardo Rodriguez turned in another great start, giving up just two hits over eight innings, and striking out nine. Alex Lange collected his fifth save.
The Tigers open a series at St. Louis tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Jordan Montgomery. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost 9-6 to the Rockies yesterday. Wade Miley tossed six shutout innings for Milwaukee, but left as Colorado scored four times in the seventh. The Rockies tacked on five more in the eighth off Peter Strzelecki and Tyson Miller. Christian Yelich, Rowdy Tellez and Tyrone Taylor homered for the Crew.
The Brewers have lost four straight, and visit the Giants tonight. Corbin Burnes will start against Sean Manaea.
