In softball yesterday…
• Hancock and Hurley split a doubleheader. The Bulldogs won the opener 5-0. Sadie Biekkola pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight. Sydney Scholie drove in two runs. Hurley took the nightcap 12-7. Biekkola had three hits, including a home run, and and drove in four runs. Sofie Freeman had two hits for Hancock.
NBA
The NBA Tournament field is set. In the final two play-in games last night…
• The Heat advanced to the Eastern Conference bracket with a 102-91 victory over the Bulls.
• The Timberwolves dispatched the Thunder 120-95, and will fill out the Western Conference bracket.
First round games begin today…
• The 76ers host the Nets.
• The Celtics welcome the Hawks.
• The Knicks visit the Cavaliers.
• The Kings welcome the Warriors.
NHL
The NHL playoffs begin Monday.
College Hockey
All-American goaltender Blake Pietila will return to Michigan Tech for a fifth season. His twin brother, Logan will also be back on the ice for the Huskies.
MLB
Nick Maton’s three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning powered the Tigers to a 7-5 victory over the Giants last night. Detroit built a 4-1 lead, as Joey Wentz turned in a solid start, and Javier Báez hit a two-run double. San Francisco tied it in the top of the eighth with three off Garrett Hill and Mason Englert. The Giants plated one in the top of the 11th off José Cisnero. In the bottom the inning, Maton came to the rescue with a two-out blast that also drove home Ryan Kreidler and Zach McKinstry.
The Tigers host the Giants again this afternoon. Michael Lorenzen is expected to return from the injured list to start against Anthony DeSclafani. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers struck early, and ripped the Padres 11-2. Milwaukee scored four times in the first inning, with help from RBI doubles by Willy Adames, Brian Anderson and Mike Brosseau. Christian Yelich homered in the second inning, and Rowdy Tellez hit two out later in the game. Eric Lauer got the win, giving up a run on five hits over six innings.
The Brewers visit the Padres again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start against Seth Lugo.
