Pioneers Take Gibson Cup Lead – Saturday Sports Wrap

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers shut down the Calumet Wolverines 5-1 in the opening game of the Gibson Cup tournament last night. Game two will be played tonight at Dee Stadium at 7:30. Coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3. Game three, if needed, will be played at the Colosseum Wednesday.

College Hockey

Minnesota and Quinnipiac will play for the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament title tonight at 8:00.

Michigan Tech goaltender Blake Pietila is an All-American. In voting by the American Hockey Coaches Association, Pietila was named to the West First Team. In his senior season, Pietila broke Michigan Tech records for shutouts in a season and career, and tied Bruce Horsch for the career wins leader with 58.

Bob Motzko of the University of Minnesota was named Division I Coach of the Year, with Jay Pandolfo of Boston University the runner-up.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Penguins this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons snapped their 11-game losing streak with a 122-115 victory over the Pacers last night. Seven Detroit players scored in double figures, led by Jaden Ivey with 29, and Killian Hayes with 28.

The Pistons visit the Bulls tomorrow afternoon.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and will host the Red Sox again today. Joey Wentz will face Tanner Houck. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers blanked the Cardinals 4-0 last night. Six Milwaukee pitchers held Saint Louis to five hits. Brandon Woodruff pitched into the sixth, and earned the win. Willy Adames had two hits, including a home run.

The Brewers entertain the Cardinals again tonight. Eric Lauer will start against Jordan Montgomery.
