Copper Country Community Mental Health (CCCMH) promoted their Community Employment Program on March 22.
They work with local companies to offer services to employ those with a disability.
Community Employment Coordinator, Ardith Brown, said ” well the ADA defines a disability as like a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more life activity.” She gave an example, “Some people have severe anxiety. That’s considered a disability because it does affect your day to day life functioning, or it can.”
Brown said that it is likely a lack of education and awareness about available resources that holds employers back from hiring those with disabilities.
When asked about individuals that have disabilities and struggle with employment, she said, “if they feel they need community mental health services, they can contact the NorthCare Network, which is where all of our consumers are referred from. They can also come right into Copper Country Community Mental Health, y’know, go to our website and check out our services and call there, and they can be connected to whoever will do the assessment for them. If it’s someone who maybe just struggles with unemployment, they can also reach out to Michigan Rehabilitation Services or Michigan Works. Those organizations also help fight unemployment.”
