Obituary: Stephen H. Sowka

UPDATE: A graveside service will be held in Section 15 at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton at 11:00 A.M. On Wednesday, May 24, 2023 with the Copper Country Veterans Association conducting military honors .

Stephen H. Sowka, 78, of Dollar Bay, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at the Omega House in Houghton.

He was born in Hancock on September 20, 1944 to the late Samuel and Florence (Neveau) Sowka. He was a 1965 graduate of Dollar Bay High School and attended college for two years. He was employed for a time at the Crown Bakery in Houghton. During the Vietnam War he served in the United States Army (General Supply Military Occupational Specialist). He returned to the Copper Country where he was employed as a deckhand on the great lakes iron ore freighters.

He enjoyed model railroading layouts and had an interest in trains. He was a miscellaneous trivia fan, and was a lifelong, dedicated Green Bay Packers fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Florence Sowka, an infant son, Christopher John Sowka, and his former wife, Pamela M. Sowka.

He is survived by a son, Scott A. Sowka of St. Johns, Arizona; a daughter, Dawn (Joe) Neher of Hancock; grandchildren Axel, Natasha, Zachariah, Obi Wan, Jordyn, and Gabriel; a brother James R. Sowka of Dollar Bay; and by several cousins.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton with Rev. Father Jubish Joseph to officiate. Also conducting military honors will be the Copper Country Veterans Association.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to Little Brothers~Friends of the Elderly in Hancock or to the Omega House in Houghton.
