Obituary: Marvyl Ann Wilson

Marvyl Ann Wilson, 84, a resident of Chassell, MI passed away on March 25, 2023, after a short battle with cancer at the Omega House in Houghton with her loving family at her side.

Marvyl was born in Laona, WI on May 30, 1938, the only child of Webster (Swede) and Esther (Friesth) Intermill. When she was six years old, Marvyl moved with her parents to Houghton MI. She graduated from Houghton High School in 1956 where her many hobbies included sewing, skiing, ice skating, and playing the piano. Marvyl also participated in many activities in school being a member of the band, the Rifle Team, and feature editor of the school paper. She was elected Queen of the 1955 Chassell Strawberry Festival and was a MTU Winter Carnival Queen candidate in 1956. Marvyl was a proud Spartan as she then attended Michigan State University and graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1960. After graduating from MSU, she returned to Houghton where she began her career as a Home Economist with the Upper Peninsula Power Company. Marvyl gave numerous cooking schools throughout the Upper Peninsula and countless school and group demonstrations in the Copper Country.

After stepping down to raise her children, Marvyl returned to work for UPPCO in her later years along with substitute teaching at Chassell and Houghton Schools. In the fall of 1962, she met the love of her life, Fritz Wilson. On June 13, 1964, she was united in marriage to Fritz at the United Methodist Church in Houghton and then moved to Half Moon Beach in Chassell where they would reside for the next fifty-nine years of her life. The church was a very important part of Marvyl’s life. She was a former member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Houghton and presently was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell where she was involved in the Church Council, Sunday School Program, community service projects and numerous committees. Throughout Marvyl’s life she was active in many local civic organizations including PEO and being a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader. Marvyl loved Chassell and helped beautify the town by volunteering as a Main Street Gardener. For forty-two years she coordinated the Christmas Market at Chassell’s Annual Old-Fashioned Christmas and was also on the Home Tour Committee. Being very active at the Chassell Strawberry Festival, Marvyl was the long-time organizer of the Arts and Crafts

Show and spent time serving as the Queen Pageant Director. In 1988, she co-chaired Chassell’s Centennial Celebration. Marvyl was a valued member of the Chassell Historical Association and The Friends of Fashion. She was the current Secretary and former President of the Chassell Women’s Club. Marvyl was an avid quilter and loved spending time with her Quilting Club friends. She enjoyed attending athletic events at Michigan Tech and was a former member of the MTU Women’s Basketball Center Court Club where she made lifelong friendships with players that her and Fritz sponsored. Marvyl was an outstanding cook and enjoyed sharing her talents with friends and family. She loved to host dinners and was truly at home in the kitchen. Most summer days were spent at “The Camp” at Three Lakes near Michigamme where for the last fifty-five years her breakfasts and “Snacks on the Dock” were legendary and talked about by all who were fortunate enough to be in attendance. Marvyl knew how much she was loved by family and friends, and she so enjoyed spending time with them. She had the unique ability to make everyone that she met feel special and she always had a smile on her face. Her positive outlook on life was treasured by

those that were fortunate enough to know her. Of course, all will dearly miss many personal things about Marvyl, but the memories will remain forever. Preceding her in death were her parents, Swede and Esther Intermill, sister-in-law Karen Wilson Ranta and brothers-in-law Mark Markantony and Donald Scott. Surviving is her husband Fritz of Chassell MI, her son Christian (Laurie) of Gaylord MI and her daughter Jan Lynn Stack (Robert) of Oswego IL. She was blessed with four grandsons, Mitchell and Matthew Wilson and Jacob and Tyler Stack. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Janie Scott and Jean Markantony along with nephews Brian Scott, Eric and Seth Markantony and nieces Sarah Frank, Karen Fischer, and Gail Mears. Marvyl leaves behind many cousins and special friends. Funeral services for Marvyl will be held on Saturday April 1 at 2 pm at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell with Pastor Soren Schmidt officiating. Spring burial will be held in the Chassell Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday March 31 from 4 to 7 pm at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell and on Saturday from 12:30 pm until the time of the services at the Church.

Lastly, the family is so appreciative and thankful of the care that Marvyl received from Portage Hospital and the Omega House in the last few weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be given to Omega House, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, or to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Marvyl.
