Laurium Pursues Grant for Village Hall Updates

The Laurium village council would like to make the village hall more energy efficient.

At Tuesday’s meeting, councilors endorsed a grant application through the state’s Financially Distressed Community, Township and Village program to replace the outdated windows and boiler with new energy efficient ones.

Keweenaw Solutions has been approved to begin upgrades to the village website. Look for some changes over the next couple of months.

The ice skating season at the George Gipp Arena has ended.

Interviews are in process to fill a 15-month Community Economic Development Association of Michigan fellowship position with the village. The CEDAM fellow will assist with projects that strengthen ties between village residents and improve the quality of life in Laurium.

The council discussed revisiting the village’s ban on retail marijuana establishments, noting that municipalities received $51,800 in state revenue sharing dollars for each outlet they hosted in 2022. Village President John Sullivan noted that the topic needs to be addressed carefully, especially since the village is still not zoned. Work on the village’s new master plan and a proposed zoning ordinance continues.
