High School
In boys basketball district playoff action last night…
• In Division Two, Houghton’s season ended with a 65-29 loss at Negaunee. The Miners put the game away by outscoring the Gremlins 23-4 in the second quarter. Mikko Salmi led the Gremlins with 10 points.
• In Division Three, Hancock fell to Gwinn 53-46. Vandan Jacques scored 15 for the Bulldogs. It was just the second victory of the season for the Modeltowners, who will face Ishpeming in the semifinals tomorrow. Calumet will play at Westwood in the other semifinal, with coverage beginning at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four, District 98 quarterfinals, Baraga dispatched Chassell 55-47. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City eliminated L’Anse 46-32. The Vikings will host Jeffers in one semifinal tomorrow night at 6:00. The Blue Bolts will entertain Lake Linden-Hubbell at 6:00 in the other semifinal.
• In Division Four, District 97 quarterfinals hosted by Ironwood, Ontonagon held off a late Ewen-Trout Creek comeback to claim a 51-49 victory. The Gladiators will face Ironwood in tomorrow’s second semifinal game at 7:00 CST. Bessemer and Wakefield-Marenisco will play in the other semifinal at 5:30 CST.
In girls regional semifinals tonight…
• In Division Two, Houghton will face Kingsley at Manistique. The start time for the game has been moved up to 5:30, with coverage beginning around 5:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Big Rapids and Standish-Sterling will play in the other regional semifinal at Clare High School.
• In Division Four, Baraga takes on Ewen-Trout Creek at 6:00 at Houghton High School. Norway and Munising will meet in the other semifinal.
Skiing
Team Michigan swept the boys and girls titles at the Eastern High School Alpine Championships at Mittersill, New Hampshire, over the weekend.
On the boys side, Sam Dehlin of Marquette was the individual winner. He is the grandson of Glen and Gail Mroz of Houghton. Eli Heathman of Houghton High School was also a member of the squad.
On the girls side, Anna Grzelak of Marquette finished fourth in the Giant Slalom. Her grandmother is Mildred Grzelak from Dollar Bay.
Team Michigan was coached by Houghton High School ski coach Larry Heathman.
NHL
The Red Wings host the Blackhawks tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons fell to the Trail Blazers 110-104 last evening. Isaiah Livers led Detroit with 17 points.
The Pistons have dropped eight straight, and entertain the Wizards this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers fell to the Red Sox 7-1 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Starter Matt Manning gave up four runs in the first inning. Riley Greene homered.
The Tigers face the Cardinals this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has signed reliever Trevor Rosenthal to a minor-league contract. Rosenthal was one of the league’s best closers until he underwent Tommy John Ligament replacement surgery in 2017. He pitched a few game for the Tigers in 2019, then had some success for the Royals and Padres in 2020. Thoracic outlet surgery and hip surgery sent him back to the sideline, and he’s trying to make another comeback at age 32.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and play the White Sox today. Corbin Burnes will start for Milwaukee.
