Obituary: Thomas Henry Juntunen

As received from Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service:

Thomas Henry “Hank” Juntunen, a resident of Hancock, MI, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the Omega House in Houghton, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Alston, MI, on June 2, 1931, he was the son of Thomas and Selma (Maamonkka) Juntunen.

As a youngster, Hank developed a keen interest in Ski Jumping at Limestone Mountain and went on to compete in tournaments around Michigan.  He instilled the love of schussing down the slopes and the family skied together for many years.

Hank liked to dance.  One Sunday at the South Range Eagles, he met Sharon “Shari” Dover Haynes.  They fell in love, married, and danced through life for the next 17 years.

Hank and Shari divided their time between Florida and Michigan.  When in Naples he golfed and when in Hancock they fished.  Captain Hank and first mate Shari happily spent countless hours on Lake Superior.  In later years a favorite pastime was watching sports and Hank was an avid armchair quarterback.

In addition to his parents, Hank was preceded in death by daughter Kim Juntunen, siblings Charles (Miemi) Juntunen, Eleanor (Arthur) Tauriainen, Linda (Henry) Lohela, Jenny (Charles) Holstein, Shirley (Franklin) Wooldridge and brothers in law Harrold Sheppard and Arthur McHardy.

Hank will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Shari; children: Lynn (Larry) Marson, and Glenn (Wanda) Juntunen; grandsons: Arjay (Julia) Juntunen, Dustin (Jen) Juntunen; four great-granddaughters: sisters Helmi McHardy, Lorraine Coleman, Elsie Sheppard, step-daughter Karen (Jesse) Heikkinen; step-grandson Cameron (Britney) Fowler; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank the Portage Hospice Nurses and Omega House caregivers for the compassionate care they provided during Henry’s end-of-life transition.

Interment will take place at a later date at the Alston Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Omega House, 2211 Maureen Lane, Houghton, MI 49931.
