After a brief reprieve caused by the recent cold snap, local spring road weight restrictions will be re-implemented Friday at noon.
The restrictions affect county and local roads in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties. Loads are generally restricted to 65 percent of normal levels.
The reduction helps protect pavement as the frost under the road thaws, and the roadbed becomes soft. Restrictions will be lifted when the roadbeds stabilize.
Local counties do not post signs about road restrictions, but officials say the limits will be strictly enforced.
The restrictions do not affect state highways – those with “M” or “US” designations. The Michigan Department of Transportation has not yet put limits into effect for our area, although much of the Lower Peninsula is now restricted.
If you have questions, contact the appropriate county road commission office.
