Houghton Claims Hockey Regional Title – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton won the regional hockey title last night, defeating Hancock 4-1. After a scoreless first period, the Gremlins took command in the second, with goals from Connor Raffaelli, Oscar Peterson and Gab Carlson. Mikey Maillette added an insurance tally early in the third, before Brady Galleto scored the Bulldogs’ only goal.

The Gremlins will face either Sault Ste. Marie or Escanaba in the quarterfinals Saturday. The Eskymoes and Blue Devils will decide their regional championship tonight.

The girls high school basketball district playoffs continue tonight…
• In the Division Two championship game, Houghton will play at Escanaba. Coverage will begin around 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• In Division Three semifinals, Hancock plays at Ishpeming at 6:00. Calumet plays at Negaunee at 6:00, with coverage beginning at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four, District 98 semifinals, Baraga plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at 6:00, and Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Jeffers at 6:00.
• Both Division Four, District 97 semifinals will be played at Bessemer – Ironwood will meet Ontonagon at 5:30 CST, and Wakefield-Marenisco will take on Ewen-Trout Creek at 7:00 CST.

Three players share top honors on this year’s Copper Mountain Conference girls basketball all-conference team.

Corina Jahfetson of Baraga, Makennah Uotila of Ontonagon and Kate Borseth of Ewen-Trout Creek all received equal votes for Player of the Year. Baraga’s Makenna Hendrickson was named Defensive Player of the Year. Lake Linden-Hubbell and Baraga tied for Team of the Year honors, and the Lakes’ Jack Kumpula was named Coach of the Year.

Local players joining Jahfetson, Uotila and Borseth on the conference Dream Team include Emily Jokela from lake Linden-Hubbell, and Ashlea Datto from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

Additional players named to the Copper Country First Team include Raena Kangas from Jeffers, Brooklyn Dompier from L’Anse, Cleo Milkey from Lake Linden-Hubbell and Kylie Michaelson from Baraga.

The Copper Country Second Team includes Hendrickson, along with Sara Johnson from Jeffers, Mylee Londo from L’Anse, Trisha Pietila from Chassell, and Evelyn Moilanen from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

Honorable Mention votes went to Olivia Shank from Lake Linden-Hubbell, J.C. Larson from Baraga and Sophie Rice from L’Anse.

In regular-season boys action last night…
• Hancock lost to Watersmeet 61-57.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City stopped Chassell 57-36.
• Baraga got past Ontonagon 61-58.
• L’Anse fell to Republic-Michigamme 70-59.
• Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Forest Park 76-29.

College Basketball

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournaments open tonight.

On the women’s side, second-seed Michigan Tech hosts Wayne State at 5:30. Third-seed Northern Michigan hosts Saginaw Valley State at 5:30.

On the men’s side, eighth-seed Michigan Tech plays at Parkside at 8:30. Fourth-seed Northern Michigan welcomes Saginaw Valley State at 7:30. 

NHL

The Red Wings lost to the Senators 6-1 last night. Dominik Kubalik gave Detroit an early lead, but the Senators reeled off six straight against Ville Husso, after scoring six against Magnus Hellberg the night before.

The Wings host the Kraken tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons entertain the Bulls tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers lost 6-4 to a split Blue Jays squad yesterday. Starter Joey Wentz gave up two runs over two innings.

The Tigers will face the Pirates this afternoon. Matt Manning will start for Detroit.

The Brewers defeated the Cubs 6-3 yesterday.

The Brewers will play the Angels this afternoon. Lucas Erceg will start for Milwaukee.

NFL

There are reports that former Bears, Panthers and Broncos head coach John Fox will be joining the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff. Fox will serve as a senior defensive consultant for a squad that finished last in yards allowed in 2022.
