Tech Hockey Sweeps NMU – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Calumet outskated De Pere 3-1. Donnie Nicely scored in the first period. Cam Anderson found the net twice in the second. Bruce Parisot made 20 saves.
• Hancock fell to Bay Port 5-0.

Both Houghton swim teams earned wins over Sault Ste. Marie Saturday. The girls’ 102-79 victory included wins by Rose Dennis in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Meg Ruohonen in diving, Stella Soumis in the 100 fly, Kaci Dewar in the 500 free, and Claire Filpus in the 100 back. The men’s 109-73 victory included wins by Collin Raasio in the 200 free, Beau Haataja in the 100 fly and 100 back, Johannes Myhre in the 100 free and 100 breast, and Brett Gaff in the 500 free.

College Hockey

The 13th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep over Northern Michigan with a 4-1 victory Saturday night in Marquette. Logan Pietila gave the Huskies an early lead. The Wildcats tied the game early in the second period, but tallies by Arvid Caderoth and Parker Saretsky put the Huskies in command, and Ryland Mosley sealed the win with a late empty-netter. Blake Pietila made 26 saves. The win moved the Huskies into second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, three point behind Minnesota State.

The Finlandia women’s team lost at Lawrence University 3-1 Saturday. Cassidy Becia scored the only goal for the Lions, who were outshot 65-19.

The Finlandia men’s team dropped a 3-0 decision at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday. The Lions were outshot 43-17.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned wins at Lake Superior State Saturday.
• The men’s team held off the Lakers 76-71. Dan Gherezgher led the Huskies with 17 points.
• The women’s team used a late surge to claim a 66-58 victory. Isabella Lenz scored18 for Tech.

Both Northern Michigan teams lost at Ferris State – the men 106-93 in overtime, and the women 72-55.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost 90-52 at Wisconsin-Stout Saturday. Emmett Johnson scored 13 for the Lions.

The Finlandia women’s team defeated Beloit 82-60 Saturday. Natalie Bartle scored 22 for the Lions, and Maija Raice added 19. Bartle pushed her steal total to 78, setting a new Finlandia school record.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Fond du Lac Bears 6-2 last night.

NHL

The Wings are off for the all-star break, and will return to action February 7th, with a home game against the Oilers.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the Rockets 117-114 Saturday night. Alec Burks scored 21 for Detroit.

The Pistons visit the Mavericks tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 8:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The NFL Conference championship games will be played today…
• The Eagles host the 49ers for the NFC crown at 3:00.
• The Chiefs welcome the Bengals for the AFC title at 6:30.
