Heikinpäivä Fun Returns Tomorrow

Heikinpäivä wraps up tomorrow, as the traditional Hancock midwinter festival events return after a COVID-19-enforced absence.

And, after a remarkably mild January, more typical Heikinpäivä weather should arrive just in time, with highs predicted in the low teens.

Jim Kurtti from the Finnish Theme Committee says the cold doesn’t bother – in fact, it helps…

We have often had it about 5 degrees or so, and the really strange thing – we get higher attendance when it’s really cold.

The tori markets will be held from 10 until 3 at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

The parade will begin at 11 near the Scott Building. It includes local performers, community groups, and a colorful collection of traditional characters…

The characters in the parade represent Finnish and Finnish American folk characters, so it’s from the ancient Kalevala of Finland, and it’s also Finnish American characters like Heikki Lunta.

This year’s Hankookin Heikki, Mary Aho Brunet, will be the featured parade guest.

The traditional circle dance will follow the parade, along with kids kicksled races, and the wife-carrying competition.

Tomorrow will end with a traditional dance and light buffet from 7 until 10 at the Finnish American Heritage Center. Music will be provided by the Back Room Boys.
