Laurium Adopts New Rental Ordinance

The Village of Laurium has a new rental housing code.

After a brief public hearing last night, the village council accepted the new rental ordinance.

It will take effect 30 days after its public posting. Landlords will then have 90 days to bring properties into compliance.

Registration will be required initially, and when the property is transferred to a new owner. As long as registration takes place within the required time frame, there is no registration fee.

Chris Holmes with UP Engineers and Architects presented information for a water project the village intends to take on. The initial cost estimate is $2 million. Officials hope to garner some state and federal grant money to help cover the cost.

Laurium has been approved for a Community Economic Development Association of Michigan fellow. The program hires an employee to work for the village, and assist Laurium on becoming Redevelopment Ready. Officials hope that employee will be in place by May, and will work with Laurium for 15 months. Redevelopment Ready qualification opens the door for a number of state grant programs.

The Laurium Fire Department has officially been recognized as a 501C3 non profit organization. The designation will help the department to apply for grants not previously accessible.
