The Christmas holiday weekend finds Michigan gas prices at their lowest levels in more than a year.
The statewide average for a gallon of unleaded regular stood yesterday at $2.98. That’s 15 cents lower than a week ago, 73 cents lower than a month ago, and 13 cents lower than last Christmas. It’s also 12 cents below the national average.
Prices on the Keweenaw Peninsula, though, continue to trend much higher. The average price for Houghton and Keweenaw Counties yesterday was $3.49. Ontonagon County was at $3.23. Baraga County was at $2.94, and Marquette County was at $2.88.
Market observers say prices are being driven downward by increased supply, and decreased demand.
