The vacant seat on the Laurium Village Council has been filled.
At this week’s meeting, Wesley Pietila was unanimously appointed to fill the vacancy until the 2024 election.
The Village Planning Commission also now has a full roster. Ian Raymond and Josh Harju were approved by the council to fill the final two vacancies. Planning Commission President Kalen Carlson told the council that the Laurium Master Plan is close to completion, and could be presented by the end of February. The commission will then begin working on a zoning ordinance.
Part time employees are being sought for a few shifts to help run the Gipp Arena. If you are interested and can operate the Zamboni, contact the village staff at 337-1600 for additional details.
Residential trash removal rates in Laurium will increase from $9.00 to $12.00 per month. The rising costs of fuel and tipping fees forced the change, which will take effect January 1st.
The Laurium Department of Public Works and Police Department reminded residents about the winter overnight street parking ban. Vehicles blocking snow plowing operations will be ticketed. Residents are also reminded not to blow or shovel snow into the street. Proper snow removal procedures are outlined in Village Ordinance #149.
