Reeve Foundation Grant to Boost Opportunities for Local Disabled Athletes

A grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation will open up track and field opportunities for disabled persons in the Keweenaw.

The $17,000 award to Equipment Loans in the Keweenaw will help purchase racing chairs, rollers, 3D printed gloves and helmets that will be loaned to students living with paralysis.

On April 29, 2023 ELK will host the first Upper Peninsula Invitational for disabled athletes from across the region.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association recently approved a two-year pilot program that expanded track opportunities for disabled athletes across the state. One of the leaders in the effort to achieve that expansion was Houghton High School athlete Maria Velat.

Equipment Loans in the Keweenaw is a branch of the Copper Country Intermediate School District. It was started 11 years ago as a way to provide adaptive equipment for local students. Recently, ELK has acquired low-cost, used, or locally-made adaptive

sports equipment for track and field competition, sled hockey and Nordic skiing. It also coordinates activities for athletes using the equipment.

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation was started by actor Christopher Reeve and his wife after Christopher was paralyzed in a horse riding accident.
