Gogebic County Trail #2 Has an Official Re-Route

An official re route for trail #2 in Gogebic County has been negotiated. Back in September the ski resort, snow river mountain resort, had announced they would no longer allow snowmobile traffic to cross over their property. The restriction cut the trail off from going around the back of the resort’s property, and would stop travel between Wakefield and Ironwood. The new route will use a portion of old US-2, and a part of a private property owner’s land.

The DNR came to an agreement with the private property owner, and municipalities, Wakefield and Bessemer. The reroute is located south of US – 2 and connects Ramsay with Wakefield. DNR representatives say the trail permissions will stay in place as long as the trail remains safe and conflicts between motorists and snowmobiles along Old U.S. 2 and Cemetery Road do not occur. Snowmobilers should travel at a safe speed, observing municipal speed limits and ride with caution and respect.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority is excited to get their season started, but have asked that snowmobilers remain off the re routed section until it is officially opened. The club is working on signage and with heavy equipment in the area, in order to prepare the section for the upcoming traffic. The club does plan to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony when the trail re route is ready for riders. Keep up to date with their club, activities and updated information about trails in Gogebic County throughout the winter, on their facebook page.
