“Art from the Kalevala” Submissions Sought

The Copper Country Community Arts Center is soliciting work from local artists for this year’s Art from the Kalevala exhibit.

The Kalevala is a 19th century work of poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot from Finnish and Karelian oral folklore and mythology. It is regarded as the national epic poem of Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature.

This year’s exhibit will focus on the many animals included in the tale. Artists may submit up to three works in any medium and are asked to provide the lines or passages from the Kalevala that inspired the work.

No entry fees are required. Deliver submissions to CCCAC 126 Quincy Street, Hancock any time up to December 23, 2022 or on Saturday, January 21, 2023 between noon and 4pm. For questions or to make special arrangements please contact Cynthia Coté at cynthia@coppercountryarts.com with “Kalevala” in the memo line.

The exhibit will open January 28, 2023, in conjunction with this winter’s Heikinpäivä celebration.
