Tech Women’s Hoops Suffers First Loss of Season – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School volleyball team takes on Kalamazoo Christian this afternoon in a Division Three state tournament semifinal game at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Coverage begins at 1:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

Pewamo-Westphalia will face Cass City in the other Division Three semifinal today at noon.

Forest Park’s volleyball tournament run ended yesterday with a 3-0 loss to Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in the Division Four semifinals.

The high school hockey season opens tonight.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season last night, falling to Southwest Minnesota State 81-69. Isabella Lenz paced MTU with 17 points.

The Huskies will play at Minnesota-Crookston tomorrow.

The Tech men’s team will host Minnesota-Crookston this evening at 6:00 at the SDC.

Both Northern basketball teams defeated Minnesota-Crookston last night – the men 97-81, and the women 74-64.

The Northern men’s team hosts Concordia-St. Paul tonight. The Wildcats women’s team plays at Southwest Minnesota State tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s team plays at the Hope College tournament this weekend, opening against the host Flying Dutch tonight. Hope is the defending NCAA Division Three national champion, and opened its season last Friday by defeating Geneva College 143-57.

The Finlandia men’s team plays at Crown College tonight, and Martin Luther College tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at St. Thomas tonight and tomorrow.

Northern visits Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow.

Both Finlandia hockey teams skate at St. Norbert tonight and tomorrow.

College Football

Nine Michigan Tech football players have been recognized by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Wide receiver Darius Willis and center Hayden Huttula were named to the First Team Offense. Linebacker Marc Sippel was named to the First Team Defense, and defensive back Braxton Blackwell to the Second Team Defense. Austin Schlicht, Will Ark, Brandon Michalak, Josh Cribben, and Hunter Buechel were honorable mentions.

Three Finlandia football players have been honored by the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Montez Archer and Jesse Hill were named to the all-conference second team. Austin Cover earned the UMAC All-Sportsmanship Award.

NHL

The Red Wings scored four times in the third period, and buried the Sharks 7-4 last night. Moritz Seider’s goal broke a 4-4 tie. Ville Husso made 21 saves.

The Wings visit the Blue Jackets tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons dropped their fifth straight game last night, 96-91 to the Clippers. Bojan Bogdanovic led Detroit with 26 points.

The Pistons visit the Lakers tonight. Coverage will begin at 10:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Packers fell to the Titans 27-17. Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes, but Green Bay was held to just 56 yards on the ground.
