Calumet Claims Regional Volleyball Title – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet won a Division Three regional title, outlasting Elk Rapids 3-2 (25-9, 25-27, 25-14, 20-25, 15-12) in a seesaw battle that went down to the wire. Helen Beiring logged 40 kills – a new school single-match record – and passed the 1,000 kill mark for her career. Laina Kariniemi had 65 assists. Allie Bjorn had 10 kills and 2 blocks, Caitlyn Strom had 11 kills, Maddie Torola had 7 kills, Jackie Kiilunen had 3 kills, 3 blocks and 28 digs, and Kaylie Halonen had 27 digs. The Copper Kings will face McBain in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Gaylord. The Ramblers blanked Oscoda 3-0 to win their regional championship. • Jeffers’ season ended with a 3-1 loss to Forest Park in a Division Four regional final.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team will face Ferris State today at 4:00 in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Bulldogs are the top seed, and are hosting the tournament. Tech is seeded fifth. Second seed Northern Michigan will play sixth seed Grand Valley at 6:30 this evening. The championship match will be played tomorrow.

Four Huskies have been honored by the GLIAC. Carissa Beyer was named to the All-GLIAC First Team, Lina Espejo-Ramirez and Jillian Kuizenga were named to the All-GLIAC Second Team, and Janie Grindland was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention.

College Basketball

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern women’s teams head to Liberty, Missouri for the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Challenge. Tech will face William Jewell tonight, and Lewis tomorrow. Northern will play Lewis tonight, and William Jewell tomorrow.

The men’s GLIAC/GLVC Crossover is being played at the SDC this weekend. Tech will face Lewis tomorrow at 2:00, and McKendree Sunday at 2:00. Northern will play McKendree tomorrow at noon, and Lewis Sunday at noon.

The Finlandia women’s team hosts Northland College tomorrow at 1:00. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia men’s team entertains Beloit tonight at 6:30, then travels to Northland College Sunday.

The Michigan Tech football team concludes its season tomorrow at Saginaw Valley State.

The Tech hockey team hosts Lake Superior State tonight at 7:07, and tomorrow at 6:07.

MLB

In advance of baseball free agency opening today, and the Rule Five Draft next week, the Detroit Tigers shuffled their 40-man roster yesterday.

All 10 of the players they had stored on the 60-day injured list were reinstated, including Beau Brieske, Kyle Funkhouser, Rony García, Sean Guenther, Matt Manning, Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, Spencer Turnbull, Jake Rogers and Austin Meadows. That forced six cuts, all of whom cleared waivers and can be assigned to Triple-A Toledo. The most notable names on the list are Victor Reyes and Bryan Garcia, who have enough seniority that they could choose to reject the assignment and become free agents.

The Tigers also claimed infielder Andy Ibáñez off waivers from the Texas Rangers yesterday.

Former Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander has declined the $25 million option in his contract with the Houston Astros, and will become a free agent.

The Brewers have declined to pick up the option they had on reliever Brad Boxberger.
