Baraga County Board OK’s New Contract for Deputies, Corrections Officers

Baraga County Sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers have a new contract.

The county commission approved the three-year pact at its meeting Monday night.

Employees will receive an immediate $2.00 per hour raise, but will get no more increases through the end of the contract.

In other action, the board…
• Renewed its contract with Tri-County Public Defenders to serve as legal counsel for indigent defendants. The firm also serves Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.
• Voted to spend $19,685 in American Rescue Plan Act funds with Sydaptic, Incorporated to install a new video recording system in the interview room at the county jail. Commissioners bypassed a lower bid because it offered fewer features, and because Sydaptic recently installed the jail’s new video surveillance system and electronic locks.

The meeting was the last for commissioners Dan Robillard, Lyle Olsen and board chair Bill Rolof, who are not running for re-election.
