Gas Prices Spike Locally, Statewide

Gasoline prices shot upward in Michigan yesterday.

AAA Michigan’s survey showed that the price of a gallon of unleaded regular jumped to $4.13 – a 16 cent leap in a 24-hour period.

Prices in the Copper Country are even higher, with Houghton County at $4.25, Keweenaw County at $4.20, Ontonagon County at $4.18, and Baraga County at $4.05.

The only explanation that’s been offered is that gasoline supplies tightened across the nation this week. That puts extra pressure on the Midwest, where production has been reduced because of the September fire at the BP Husky refinery in Toledo. Repairs there are expected to keep the facility offline until early next year.
