A New Business in Calumet Offers Alternatives to Alcoholic Beverages

As the holiday season fast approaches, the pressure to join in and partake in drinking also trends up. And for some people, taking a break from drinking can be complicated by social pressures. A new business in Calumet, seeks to show people that you can still enjoy an adult beverage, even without the affects of alcohol. Michael Mallow, owner of Of the Water, opened his shop when he found that there were not many options for those choosing to abstain from alcohol or simply want a break.

“Decided to sell that place. And when I did I started investigating non-alcoholic spirits with a company in Austrilia, which was Lyre’s Spirits. And then I realized that there’s a place for this in the community. People were wanting to take a break from alcohol, and this is a way to help them transition, by being included without having to feel the affects of alcohol.” – Michael Mallow, Owner of Of the Water

Mallow, previously operated a beer and wine store in twin lakes, before traveling to Minnesota, and finding some early examples of non alcoholic liquors and beers. He says that his passion is raising awareness for health and wellness focused products; And that means more than just non alcoholic spirits.

“Now we carry nootropics, which is designed to give you an euphoric feeling, and relaxation, without any side effects. The other side of nootropics is that it allows you too get a better night’s sleep. So the premise is that you sleep really well, you wake up, you’re rested, you’re more focused. And so as a result you’re more mentally fit.” – Michael Mallow, Owner of Of the Water

With holiday parties on the horizon, learning about different drink options can make the party fun for everyone. For those curious about Of the Water, their wellness products, and about non alcoholic spirits, check them out on fifth street. Their location is found next to the Calumet Community Gardens.
