Slow Gas Price Slide Continues

Gasoline prices continue to fall across Michigan, with the statewide average slipping back below $4.00 per gallon within the last week.

AAA Michigan’s survey places the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular at $3.95. That’s nearly 10 cents less than a week ago, and 21 cents less than a month ago, but still 68 cents higher than a year ago.

As of yesterday, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties remained well above the statewide average, at around $4.19 per gallon. Ontonagon County was at $4.00, and Baraga County at $3.75.

AAA’s Andrew Gross said the lower prices are a result of modest demand in the United States, and softer-than-expected oil prices on the world market.

Michigan remains higher than the national average of $3.76 partly because of the shutdown of the Husky BP refinery in Toledo. Repairs to that facility following a fire in September are expected to extend into next year.
