Kings Take Title! Sunday Sports Wrap

Calumet Girls Win State Title
The Calumet girls basketball team overcame a slow start, and defeated Flint Hamady 57-49 in the Class C state championship game Saturday afternoon. The Copper Kings trailed by six at the end of the first quarter… but tied the game at halftime… and outscored the Hawks 20-13 in the fourth quarter. Lexie Rowe led Calumet with 22 points, and Clara Loukus added 10. Terilynne Budreau grabbed a dozen rebounds, and Ellen Twardzik captured 11. A victory celebration is planned for this afternoon at 4:00 at the CLK gym.

Saint Ignace won the Class D title Saturday, overcoming a 20-point deficit early in the third quarter to edge Pittsford 64-60 in overtime.

MTU Hockey Falls in WCHA Final
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost to Minnesota State 5-2 on the WCHA tournament title game Saturday. The Huskies took an early lead on goals by Blake Pietila and Alex Petan, but the Mavericks scored the final four goals of the contest to take the Broadmoor Trophy. Tech defeated Bowling Green 5-2 Friday night to advance to the championship game.

Pairings for the NCAA tournament will be announced today at noon. The selection show will be televised on ESPNU. The Huskies are hoping for their first berth in the tournament in 34 years.

NHL – Red Wings Face Blues
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Blues this afternoon. Face-off is at noon on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Beat Bulls
The Detroit Pistons rode a strong second half to a 107-91 victory over the Bulls Saturday night. Detroit trailed by a dozen points at halftime, but put the game away by outscoring Chicago 54-19 in the final 19 minutes. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 22 points – 17 in the third quarter. The Pistons will play at Boston this evening.

MLB
David Price pitched into the fifth inning, as the Tigers defeated the Mets 6-4 Saturday. Price struck out seven, but also gave up two runs on eight hits.

The Tigers slit their squad for games against the Nationals and Braves today. Justin Verlander will start against Washington, and Kyle Lobstein will open against Atlanta. Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez are expected to see their first action of the spring as designated hitters in each game.

Kyle Lohse gave up one run over five innings, as the Brewers pounded the Rangers 12-2 Saturday. The Brewers will play the White Sox this afternoon.
