Faith-based adoption agencies in Michigan which claim a religious exemption would be allowed to decline services to certain potential adoptive parents without risk of losing taxpayer funding, under bills approved by the Michigan House Wednesday.
Votes on the Republican-sponsored bills were mostly along party lines. All three bills passed by votes of 65-44.
Supporters say faith-based adoption agencies should not be required to enter in any arrangement that would violate their beliefs.
But critics say the bills amount to being a license to discriminate against gays or unmarried couples.
The bills now go to the Michigan Senate.
