Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly Celebrate 40 Years at Tonight’s Gala Event

In 1982 The Upper Peninsula’s Little Brothers – Friends of the elderly chapter was established, to help combat loneliness among the elderly. And this year the local non-profit has celebrated their special anniversary during their summer events, but tonight is designated just the special date. Houghton County is one of five chapters in the united states, and remains the international organization’s only rural program in the globe. The chapter’s local Founder, Mike Aten, says that the chapter was founded in Houghton county to combat the area’s specific conditions that can make feelings of isolation worse for seniors, and the unusually high concentration of elderly residents in a small area. Today 1,300 elders in the community take part in Little Brothers programs, with just as many volunteers making the programs possible. Tonight little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly will celebrate their 40th anniversary in the Memorial Union Building, doors open at 5:30 pm.
