Obituary: Nina M. Backon

Nina M. Backon, 47, a resident of Houghton, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at home due to a pulmonary embolism.

She was born on February 26, 1975, in Hancock, to Robert and the late Sandra (Rintala) Backon. She was raised in Houghton and graduated from Houghton High School with the class of 1993. Following school, Nina went on to attend University of Michigan where she received her bachelor’s degree and then enrolled at Detroit-Mercy Law School where she made the dean’s list and graduated Cum Laude in 2001. She was a Jerome P. Cavanaugh Scholar recipient and was a member of American Inns of Court, Phi Alpha Delta and worked for Southfield Law Firm.

Nina returned home to the Copper Country in 2011 to be closer to family. Following her mother’s passing in 2016, Nina moved into the family home to help take care of her father. She had a love for pets and an even greater love for her family. Nina was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock.

Preceding her in death are her mother, Sandra Backon, her maternal and paternal grandparents and an uncle, Norman Backon.

She is survived by her father, Bob Backon of Houghton
Her brother, Steven (Leigh) Backon of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI
Her niece Charleigh Backon
Her aunt Christine (Jim) Lickman of Hancock
Her uncle Roger (Sandy) Rintala of Calumet
Numerous Cousins and friends.

A memorial service for Nina will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with Rev. Brahm Semmler-Smith to officiate. Interment will take place in the Gloria Dei Columbarium.
Friends may call on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, from 10am until the time of services at the church.
