Houghton May Keep Temporary Stoplights – City Council Report

Should they stay, or should they go?

Those temporary stoplights installed on Sharon Avenue to help control traffic during the US-41 detour are generating positive feedback to Houghton city officials.

At last night’s council meeting, City Manager Eric Waara reported that staffers are looking into what it would cost to keep them.

Detour-related problems continue, however, along Houghton Avenue, where many drivers using it as a shortcut are traveling too fast. A temporary speed bump has been installed near Jim’s Foodmart, and the city plans to bring in a portable radar sign, to encourage slower traffic speeds.

Waara also updated council members on recent improvements at Dee Stadium, including new netting that will help keep hockey pucks from flying into the crowd. The Octantis cruise ship enjoyed a second successful visit to the city, with additional trips planned September 7 and 21.

The council voted to proceed with a potential small property sale associated with the upcoming demolition of the big parking deck. Braveworks wants to expand its building at 326 Sheldon Avenue, and needs 10 more feet at the back of the property. The next step will be to have an appraisal prepared.
