Calumet Celebrates the 18th Annual Pasty Fest

Many came out to enjoy another year of Pasty Fest in downtown Calumet. Hundreds came out to enjoy the unique dish, watch the pasty eating competition, play in a bounce house, and join in on the fun at the foam party. Prior to the pasty eating contest, Calumet enjoyed a fun and enthusiastic parade. John Bates defeated a field of six in the pasty eating contest. After a tie at the end of the first round, Bates won, finishing an additional pasty before his competitor. Pasty kits sold out quick once again. After all the votes were tallied, Slim’s of Mohawk reigns supreme among the Copper Country’s pasties, winning for the second year in a row. The village was even joined by special guest, Tom Daldin, of Under the Radar Michigan. He and his crew are in the area working on another episode of their PBS program, focusing on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Daldin added that he loves traveling to the Upper Peninsula for the vast forests, people and the region’s way of life.

Pasty Fest Winners:

Slim’s of Mohawk won the Pasty Bake off. And Griffin Cafe was the runner up for the best pasty in the Copper Country Bake-Off.

Jon “the Hammer” Bates won the Pasty Eating Competition.
