Angel Mission to Dedicate New Home

One of Calumet’s most vital charitable efforts will celebrate a milestone tomorrow morning.

The Copper Country Angel Mission Free Store will cut the ribbon at its new location. After 20 years serving the community, board member Sherry Middlemis-Brown says it will be the first time the charity has owned its own facility…

With renting places, you don’t have a lot of control over the situation. We needed to have a place where we could have our storage, that we could do our programs, and, hopefully, where we could eventually expand our services to people.

The new home is the former North End Bar building, at the north end of 5th Street. Money for the downpayment was raised through the Portage Health Foundation’s Giving Tuesday campaign. Middlemis-Brown says mortgage payments will be less than the organization has previously paid in monthly rent.

The Angel Mission provides clothing and other household items free of charge to those who need them. It also coordinates a food pantry, short-term emergency assistance to individuals and families, and the annual Angel Tree Christmas gift campaign. Donations of back-to-school supplies are now being collected.

The ribbon will be cut tomorrow at 11 a.m., and an open house will continue until 4 p.m.
