The Keweenaw Wild Bird REC Sticker Contest is Underway

The Keweenaw Wild Bird REC’s sticker contest will seek beautiful designs capturing two special bird species to the non-profit. This year the group is highlighting the most common species they take in each summer, Black-capped chickadees and Northern flickers. This summer they rehabilitated two nests of birds displaced by tree cutting during nesting season.  Both species are cavity nesting birds. The winning designs will be made into 3”x3” sticker and may be used for a t-shirt design. Submitting a design will cost adults ten dollars and kids five dollars. The deadline to submit your sticker is September 1st. See below for more details on the Sticker Contest.

Attention artists of all ages: Sticker Contest 2022!!!

We are excited to launch our second annual summer fundraiser highlighting the most common species we take in each summer. We had two very special nests of birds displaced by tree cutting during nesting season.  Both are cavity nesting birds.  Black-capped chickadees and Northern flickers will be this summer’s picks! We are SO excited to see what creativity we have in the Keweenaw and beyond! We know we will get some AWESOME designs! The winning designs will be made into 3”x3” sticker and may be used for a t-shirt design.! See below for details!

Who can enter?
Everyone! There will be a youth category and an adult category.

What can I draw?
Black-capped chickadee or Northern flicker.  It could be a portrait of one of these species or a nature scene of them in the wild. Please add the abbreviation KWBREC and your initials somewhere in the design.

What is the cost to enter?
$10/design for adults and $5/design for children. Feel free to submit more than one design! All proceeds go towards the care and feeding of our native wild bird patients.

Donations for entrees can be paid through Venmo @kwbrec, through PayPal or checks can be sent and written out to Keweenaw Wild Bird REC 21176 Boston Crosscut, Hancock, Michigan, 49930.

Deadline?
September 1st, 2022. We will announce the winners shortly after the deadline.

How do I submit my drawing?
Simply take a photo of your design and email it to keweenawwildbirdrec@gmail.com or send in the mail if you don’t have access to a phone with a camera. Hang onto your original design as we may need the paper original or a better photo if the winning image needs to be improved for printing of the winning stickers.

Additional information to include:
Please also indicate your name, age, location (and school if applicable) along with your design. Parents, please include this information for your child. Please also indicate if we have permission to share your name, age, location and school as we’d love to share all of the designs with the public via our Facebook and Instagram pages.

What if I’m the winner?
Both winners will receive some stickers to share with friends, family and classmates and the title of KWBREC Summer of Cavity Nesters Sticker Champions. We will also print these for future use in our organization and depending on the design, we may print them on t-shirts.  If we do, you will also get a t-shirt with your design!

Tips from Chris Schmidt at Studio 13 Houghton (our logo designer):
“I try to avoid fine detail and emphasize bold colors and thick lines, but pretty much anything can work on a sticker.” Chris will also be helping to judge the designs!

A little bit more about the contest and our organization:
Make sure that  the sticker is a design you have made specifically for this contest, not a past drawing or painting.  We are a 501c3 non profit organization.  Our mission is to provide quality wildlife rehabilitation to native wild birds in need, excluding raptors, in addition to school-aged education and conservation projects.  Check out our Facebook page to find out more about our 501c3 organization and to follow updates on patients in our care: https://m.facebook.com/KWBREC/

We hope you also take this opportunity to learn about the bird you have chosen to draw! https://www.allaboutbirds.org is a great resource to learn about birds.
