Officials Seek Info About Isle Royale Wildfire Cause

The Mount Franklin wildfire on Isle Royale remains at about six acres in size. 

Firefighters reported yesterday that hose has been laid around the perimeter. While progress has been made in suppressing the fire, it is not considered contained. A 10-member crew from Minnesota is working at the scene.

The cause of the fire has still not been determined, but investigators are seeking information about an illegal fire and associated camp that was set up on the Mount Franklin Trail from Friday evening into Saturday morning.

Some trails remain closed:
• Greenstone Ridge Trail between the Ojibway Trail junction to the Tobin Harbor/Duncan Bay Portage
• Lane Cove Trail
• Mount Franklin Trail
• Tobin Harbor Trail between the Mount Franklin Trail and Suzy’s Cave Trail.

 • Lane Cove campground is open, but only accessible to paddlers.

 • Cross-Country Camping Zones 8, 8A, 9A, 10, 11, 12, 33, 36 are closed.

 • The north side of the Three Mile Dock is closed to allow unrestricted NPS vessel access.
