MTU Alum Donates Boat

Michigan Tech has a new boat.

The 47-foot catamaran is now moored at the Great Lakes Research Center.

It was donated by alumnus Gary Hagstrom, a member of the class of 1972, who spent 35 years as an engineer and project manager for Chevron.

Previously known as Crackerjack, the boat has been renamed the Lupine. It’s 13 years old, has twin diesel engines, and the capacity to house crew overnight. GLRC officials say that gives them workspace and handling abilities that are superior to their current vessels.

It will be used for research by students and other scientists on Lake Superior, and could factor into the university’s plans to establish a second base of study in Traverse City.
