Students Learn from the Best, How to Fly, at Houghton County Memorial Airport

For over a decade the Copper Country Civil Air Patrol has brought in students from near and far to learn how to fly. All week students from neighboring states and counties have met at Houghton County Memorial Airport to learn the ins and outs of flying, aviation, and all the work that happens behind the scenes when you head out on the runway. During the week students attend both class and try out flying before stepping foot in a plane. With the help of flight simulators, students learn how to run through their pre flight check lists, learn how to read and understand the gauges and try flying from the ground. Public Affiars Officer, Kevin Cadeau, says that there are obvious differences when comparing really life flying to the simulators.

When you’re using the simulator its a little bit more sensitive with the controls. In a real aircraft, it has a heavier feel to it, which I think makes it a little easier. But when you’re in the real world you’re dealing with turbulence, and that sort of hing. And you’re feeling the G-force on your body, which you don’t get using the flight simulator. And it’s usually one of things the students come back and talk about. – Kevin Cadeau, Public Affairs Officer, Copper Country Civil Air Patrol

Each year the Copper Country Civil Air Patrol invites high school students to their one week annual flight school. Over the past decade students have come from northern Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and even from other countries. The civil air patrol enjoys teaching people how to fly, especially when they get the opportunity to teach the next generation of pilots.
