The Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy will work with Baraga County to manage and develop a huge new public area in Covington Township.
The county will own the 1,184 acres of forestland, which includes more than four miles of frontage on the Sturgeon River.
The land is being purchased with the help of a $2.7 million grant from the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund.
In anticipation of the purchase, the Baraga County Board of Commissioners revamped and expanded its Parks and Recreation Committee late last year.
The SWP and the Great Lakes Climate Corps will help the county develop hiking trails, kayak launches and environmental education kiosks. The goal is to have at least some of the amenities in place by next summer, with full access available by the summer of 2024.
