Local COVID-19 Numbers Rise Slightly

After a big jump two weeks ago, COVID-19 numbers in our edged upward over the past week.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports 112 new confirmed cases in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon counties. That compares to 101 cases in the previous week, which was dramatically higher than the 44 the week before that.

The local numbers mirror the state trend, with average per-day diagnoses rising slightly last week.

Infection rates in the western Upper Peninsula continue to be among the highest in the state.

Officials note that the actual infection rates could be significantly higher. At-home positive results are frequently not reported. Mild cases may go undiagnosed. Even those with mild or no symptoms can still transmit the virus to others.
