Helmi K. Maki, 101, a former resident of Atlantic Mine, passed away Friday, July 15, 2022, at the Canal View – Houghton County where she had been a resident patient.
She was born on January 18, 1921, in Baltic, a daughter of the late Charles and Kaisa Heikkinen. Helmi was raised in South Range and attended the Jeffers School.
Helmi then had worked various jobs in the area such as cleaning homes and picking potatoes until become a cook for St. Joseph’s Hospital.
On January 20, 1940, she was united in marriage to Edwin Maki. The couple made their
home in Atlantic Mine where they raised their family. On November 27, 2008, Edwin preceded Helmi in death.
Mrs. Maki was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Atlantic Mine. She enjoyed playing Solitary and reading books and the Gazette.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Her daughter Cheryl Roushia-Cramer, her daughter-in-law: Janice Maki; her parents, her brothers: Arnold and Rudy; her sisters: Marie Negri, Mildred, McBurney, and Eleanor Silvola.
Surviving are:
Her son: Ronald Maki at resident patient at the Canal View – Houghton County
Her daughter: Susan (Leonard) Westenberg of Nisula
7 grandchildren,10 Great grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins
A graveside service for Helmi will be held 11:00 am Tuesday July 26, 2022, at the Mt. View Cemetery of South Range with Licensed Lay Minister Elaine Henderickson to officiate.
